Wide Receiver Ranks- 2009

Let me make this point right away: You need to get two of the top 16 receivers this year. Period. Let me hit it home with some larger font and some bold. You need to get two of the top 16 receivers this year.
There, I hope that works. The drop off after those 16 guys is so large mixed with the fact that running back is ostensibly deep that you need to get them early.

Tier One: The Superstars

1. A. Johnson
2. L. Fitzgerald
3. C. Johnson
4. R. Moss

I really don’t think you can go wrong with any of these guys barring some sort of injury. I think that;s all that really needs to be said

Tier Two:

5. R. White
6. S. Smith
7. A. Boldin
8. G. Jennings
9. M. Colston
10. R. Wayne

All six is these guys are standouts. “Rowdy” Roddy White’s development looks to continue with the burgeoning Matt Ryan. Smith is always a stud if he can remain as healthy as he has been over the last few years. Boldin is just as good as Fitz but is marked down based on the fact that there’s an outside chance he’ll be traded. Jennings is touchdown and big play dependant but has always shown the ability to get it done. Colston is a monster every time on the field. Reggie Wayne is the main target in the most consistent offence of the decade so I see no need for concern there.

Tier three: Your last hope

11. TJ Houshmandzadeh
12. B. Edwards
13. T. Owens
14. D. Bowe
15. V. Jackson
16. W. Welker

Here you have your last hope to fill your WR2 slot. Edwards and Owens have bust possible bust potential but can easily out perform their draft positions if they learn how to catch, the other four are safe picks who are currently entrenched as their team’s main target, yes Welker included.

Tier four: Risk vs. Reward

17. B. Marshall
18. C. Ochocinco
19. R. Willams

All of these guys has WR1 potential, unfortunately they also have droppable after week 8 potential. All come with the obvious question marks. Will Marshall play this year? Will he be traded? Can he gorw up enough to be a superstar? Who knows really? He is an unbelievable talent regardless of who is throwing him the ball, he just needs to play. The artist formally known as Chad Johnson seems to have righted himself and can be awesome once again. He could also get suspended for Twittering from the sidelines and forget there’s a football game going on. Roy Williams could step into the Owens role seamlessly in Dallas but his chemistry with Romo was not so evident last year. So pick your poison, if you take a more conservative approach the next tier of players is for you.

Tier Five: Slightly better than the rest

20.. B. Berrian
21.. D. Jackson
22. E. Royal
23. A. Gonzalez
24. A. Bryant
25. J. Cotchery
26. L Evans
27. K. Walter
28. D. Hester
29. H. Ward
30. D. Driver
31. L. Moore
32. D. Mason
33. T. Holt

All proven performers over the last three years, some are old some are young and some are on new teams. DeSean Jackson, Eddie Royal and Tony Gonzalez 2 look to be the big break out candidates from this group. All are in better situations from a year ago and all showed their chops last year, the next step is stardom. People are down on Cotchery but I think he is a great post hype sleeper and could become a quality target for one Mark Sanchez. Evans could see an upgrade with Owens drawing double coverage. Ward is always good some a 2 TD game every now and again. Lance Moore is a part for the prolific Saints offence which could mean touchdowns and yards galore. If Hester learned how to catch in the off season he could be deadly. Holt and Mason will give you much of the same. Both are sticky handed route runners who will be counted on to clog up the middle and allow others to stretch the field.

Tier Six: Possible sleepers/ Lottery tickets

34. D. Avery
35. J. Morgan
36. S. Moss
37. L. Coles
38. S. Holmes
39. D. Hixon
40. P. Harvin
41. J. Gage
42. M. Walker
43. S. Breaston
44. P. Crayton
45. T. Ginn Jr.
46. C. Chambers
47. N. Washington
48. C. Henry
49. J. Galloway
50. S. Rice
51. D. Branch
52. N. Burleson
53. M. Bradley
54. I Bruce
55. E. Bennett
56. J. Maclin
57. Mark Clayton
58. M. Muhammad
59. S. Smith (NYG)
60. H. Nicks

Avery, Moss, and Morgan are all the number one receivers on their respective teams so that gives them beaucoup targets which gives them all value. Someone will emerge from Hixon and Nicks with Smith firmly solidified as the slot man. Mike Walker can build on a sneaky season last year which saw him have some very productive games. The rest are hit and miss. Someone is going to catch balls in Tennessee and Gage already knows the system and is comfortable with Collins but they invested a lot of cash in “Nasty” Nate Washington who can truly stretch the field vertically. Galloway is interesting but the passes will be scarce with Moss and Welker getting the majority of passes and it’s not like he was consistent to being with. The most interesting rookie has to be Percy Harvin “a time” who should fill out that slot role in Minni pretty well and could see some long Tds come his way. Isaac Bruce turned back the clock last year and may have a little left in the tank but don’t count on too much. Jeremy Maclin find himself in a great situation with the Eagles but may be a year away. Lastly, the always popular sleeper Mark Clayton has never been in a better spot to finally realize a smidgen of that potential. Mason to work inside/outside on Dbs, and effective running game to set up play action and a QB with a gigantic arm who can hit him deep. All the pieces are in place, that being said, people say this every year and it never happens, so don’t bank on it.
