The best strategy for defences that I have used over the years is the streaming defence method. Every week you can find available defences on the waiver wire who have incredible match ups. I’m never one to draft a defence ( or kicker) outside of the last two rounds so I roll with the best available defensive match up week to week. Where you got good value in the draft to sure up some receiver or running back depth, some people decided that Baltimore’s defence was a great pick in round 8. This blows my mind. Why? Because there are so many good match ups just sitting there every week, waiting to be exploited. Two years ago the Dolphins went 1-15. The highest scoring defence of the year were if you started whatever defence that played Miami every week. They were always good to not score and turn the ball over at a rapid pace. So this year it is probably true that people drafted the Ravens, Steelers, Chargers and Eagles D; so who else is out there that we can use and get good points out of this week.
Seattle D at home against the Rams - The Rams are going to be better this year but that’s only when we reflect at the end of the year and they upset a team or two from weeks 12-17. This week, they’ll be the same Rams who can’t really do much. The Seattle crowd is a true factor on their defence. Marc (with a C? come on French get it together) Bulger is coming back from broken fingers on his throwing hand which will allow him to more easily participate in his favorite pastime: throwing a lot of picks. Steven Jackson is the main threat to score here but I think that the ‘hawks can mitigate the damage he does and keep the scoring to a minimum and nab some turnovers on the way.
Dallas at Tampa Bay - Dallas loves to get pressure on the quarterback; they led the NFL in sacks last season. This will be a great match up for them with the new offensive system for the Bucs and the heavy footed quarterback play of Byron Leftwich. Lord Byron can be an effective passer but the pressure will force him into some very bad passes which should pay off in fantasy points for the Dallas D.
Tennessee D at Pittsburgh - One of the best units in the league last season returns everyone but the brick wall that occupied the middle. So why do people seem to be so down on the Titans’ D this week? Because they are missing that brick wall, that's why. But, I really think people over estimate how good the Steel Curtain’s offence is. Just to clear the air: they’re not that good. They play tremendous defence and try to control the clock through their running game. Their offensive line is worse than cancer so Big Ben will be on the run and prone to turnovers. I look for some sacks, maybe a pick and few points.
MYSTERY D OF THE WEEK
People are going happy go jacky for the Saints D this week. The Saints defence. The one that includes All-Shit defensive backs Jason David and Mike Mackenzie. People really think these guys are good, quick note, they are not, not at all. Just because someone has a visor and dreadlocks, looking at you Mike, doesn’t make you a good defender, it just makes it look like you’re good. People are so high on them because they play the pathetic Lions, which isn’t a bad strategy. I think the Lions will be very terrible this season but I also think they’ll score some points while getting blown out. They have the making of a very good offensive triplets with Megaton, Kevin Smith and rookie Matt Stafford. They may get some picks but watch out because the final score could be something like 45-30 which is probably doing you no good.
