San Francisco @ Arizona
The 49ers offence comes into the year with a plethora of question marks. Shaun Hill is the starter, that we know for sure. Playing the sieve Arizona defence Hill should be a reasonable starter. Frank Gore generally plays well against the Cards despite the fact that their run defence at home was quite stellar last season. If you drafted Gore you’re going to be using him. Keep an eye on the role that Glen Coffee plays in this offence; he could prove to be a nice bye week filler in a few weeks. I like Josh Morgan to receiver the majority of Hill’s passes and maybe a score. Isaac Bruce is ancient but that doesn’t mean he still can’t contribute. Monitor his progress this week and make your own judgements after that, I wouldn’t have him near my lone up this week..
The Cards return most of the core that led them to that surprising Super Bowl run in ‘08. Starter Warner and Fitzgerald with unwavering confidence. Boldin is on the mend with a poor hammy but I expect him to play. If he does become a game time scratch instantly throw Steve Breaston into your line up, if he wasn’t already. Given the choice, I’m starting Tim Hightower this week over Beanie Wells. Wells had one nice preseason game but that’s hardly enough to warrant a week one start. He could be great, don’t get me wrong but it’s hardly worth the week one risk with so many better options out there. The Cardinals defence is a sneaky play this week as they are generally a scoring defence, just don’t count on them keeping the 49ers off the board.
St. Louis @ Seattle
The Rams could possibly be the worst team in the league to start the year. Their offence is led by the underrated Steven Jackson who should get off to a good game to start the season. don’t start Marc Bulger, actually don’t have him on your team at all. He’s coming off a broken finger which could become rather problematic for a guy who makes a living throwing a ball. Donnie Avery comes into the year as the number one guy at receiver and should put in a respectable game this week, just don’t set your sights too high. We’re all waiting to see who will emerge as the team’s number two receiver, this week should help us to better identify that.
I love Matt Hasselbeck and TJ Houshmandazdeh this week. Playing the Rams awful D should prove to be an excellent launching pad for this duo. I just can’t trust Julius Jones despite the fact that it’s an awesome match up; I’m leaving him on the bench this week. Nate Burleson and Deion Branch. What to do with them? I say sit them this week and next to see if one will be a heavy contributor. If your league includes return yards both become a slightly more respectable start. Tight end John Carlson should be the second most targeted receiver this week and will continue to be an excellent sleeper until people finally realize his greatness.
Washington @ NY Giants
Not much to like on the Redskins side this week at all. don’t start Jason Campbell. Ever. He’ll just make you look foolish. People will start Portis on name value but I really hate this match up for him, he really struggled vs. the Giants last season. Malcom Kelly comes in to the season as the number two wide out but doesn’t warrant a start this week. Santana Moss could surprise this week with a long score but temper your expectations. The Cooler should provide some good value in PPR leagues but probably won’t eat up the yards.
A tougher match up for the Giants than one would think. With newly acquired Albert Haynesworth clogging up the middle it made prove tough for Jacobs and Bradshaw to pile up too many yards. Hard to predict which Giants receivers will break through here so I wouldn’t start any. The one decent play would be Steve Smith in a PPR league. Keep an eye on Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks and Dominic Hixon to see who Eli prefers to nab those deep Plaxico balls. Speaking of Eli, I really wouldn’t go that route this week, there are better options available.

Chicago @ Green Bay
The Bears get to show off their new franchise quarterback jay Cutler this week. One thing he’ll find out quickly is that the Bears don’t have the same type of talent at receiver as the Broncos did. Devin Hester is no Brandon Marshall. Marshall may be better from the sidelines than Hester is on the field. Cutler is a borderline play for me this week, I really think you can do better. No receivers really stand out to me for starting consideration. I do like Forte and the burgeoning Dexter look a like Greg Olsen. The Bears D could be a sit this week going against a formidable Packers offence.
Let the reign of Aaron Rodgers begin. I love Rodgers to find Jennings in the end zone this week. Both are excellent plays. The Bears D isn’t what it used to be so this should provide a good match up for Ryan Grant as well. Donald Driver will get the start in some leagues but there are probably better options available. As a super sleeper, JaMichael Finley could develop into a nice sleeper and big body down the middle for Rodgers. The Packers D could come up with some turnovers this week. People for get that Culter trailed only Brett Favre in interceptions last season. Be cautious but it could prove its worth.
