STUDS:
David Garrard vs. St. Louis
Position Rank: 7
I thought I had a gauge on Garrard and the jags in general but it seems I was off. I recommended Garrard last week and he produced a quality 1 one point worth of value. All that being said, I have not decided to jump off the bandwagon yet. In two home games this year Garrard has amassed 605 yards and 5 touchdowns. Turns out he’s not so good on the road. Also, and maybe more importantly, the awful Rams come to town who are in the bottom five in passing and rushing yards allowed on top of points allowed. If there’s going to be a theme this week it’s going to be: Start your Jags.
Matt Hasselbeck vs. Arizona
Position Rank: 10
Hassel beck stormed back into action last week and torched the Jags for 4 TDs. Look for him to keep the same momentum going against a bad cards pass defense. This should be a high scoring affair which should keep Hassel beck throwing for the entire game. He’s still available in a lot of leagues so he may be a really nice plug and play if you’re having bye trouble at QB.
Donnie Avery @ Jacksonville
Position Rank: 34
The more the week goes on the more I like Avery. Avery nabbed his first TD pass last week when Bulger returned in the fourth quarter and looks to build on that against a porous Jags defense. The Jags rank 30th in the league while trying to defend the pass and the Rams will probably be behind which should allow avery to deliver on the preseason hype, at least for one week.
Hines Ward vs. Cleveland
Position Rank: 12
Ward has quietly been producing stellar lines every week. On the season he has only scored below 8 fantasy points once and will surely light up the Browns who struggle to say the least on the defensive side of the ball. Look for Ward to pile up the catches and maybe a score.
Ryan Grant vs. Detroit
Position Rank: 2
I don’t just like Grant to cover the 10 points but blow it out. The Lions are 20th in rush defense and the Pack are going to want to prove they can run the ball. That combination should provide Grant with a lofty stat line.
Marcedes Lewis vs. St. Louis
Position Rank: 8
Lewis has scored in both home games this year and is a frequent red zone target for Garrard on every visit to the 20. Nothing really stand out from the former Bruin but this match up really plays to his skills. He can use his speed to beat the linebackers up the middle and use his size to create mismatches with the secondary. If you have Dallas Clark or Jason Witten, you may be able to drive this Marcedes to a win.
Eagles Defense/Special Teams @ Oakland
I’ve seen the Eagles D/ST available in a surprising amount of leagues. They’re playing the Raiders this week, go get them and quickly plug them in your lineup.
Nate Kaeding vs. Denver
The Chargers offense has failed to score touchdowns on their red zone visits to this point. Denver plays a solid blend of bend and don’t break defense. All this should provide Kaeding with plenty of opportunities to tally up some points.
DUDS:
Willis McGhee @ Minnesota
Position Rank: 25
McGahee will follow his dud performance of last week with another this week. His entire value is predicated on his ability to score touchdowns and that’s just not going to happen against a very good Vikings defense. Ray Rice has emerged as the feature back and will be relied upon heavily in this game to catch ball out of the backfield.
Terrell Owens @ New York Jets
Position Rank: 35
Forget the name and look at the stats. Through five games he has 12 catches for 202 yards and a touchdown and a quarter of those came on one catch. This week he has to deal with The DRE and that’s not an encouraging sign. See if you can trade him, if not, you may want to consider dropping him soon.
Percy Havrin vs. Baltimore
Position Rank: 31
Harvin’s whole value is predicated on his ability to make big plays and big plays are not something that’s a trend with the Ravens defense. Baltimore’s defense will look to shut down Harvin from getting catches in the flats and breaking one loose. His best chance to score will come on special teams, where the Ravens struggle.
Donovan Mcnabb @ Oakland
Position Rank: 14
East travels West as the Eagles go to the black hole for a date with the Raiders. While it’s a good match up I see the Eagles getting up early and running the ball down the raiders throats. Start him as your own risk but be careful, better match ups are you there.
LaDainian Tomlinson vs. Denver
Position Rank: 29
LT makes his return to the line and gets to face a tough Broncos D. He has great career stats against the Broncos but this is a different LT and a different Broncos defense. Curb your expectations with Tomlinson but the future is bright, with a slew of games remaining against the AFC West.
Eli Manning @ New Orleans
Position Rank: 15
Manning and the Giants travel to the Bayou for a meeting with the Saints on the fast track of the Superdome. The combination of Gregg Williams and Darren Sharper have vastly improved the this defense, especially against the pass. With his heel injury still lurking around I see this as a bad week for Sir Eli.
Visanthe Shiancoe vs. Baltimore
Position Rank: 10
Schiancoe will probably be relied on to help out in the blocking game with could limit his offensive production. He may be able to snake a red zone TD but that’s a best case scenario. Temper your expectations this week.
Cincinnati Defense/Special Teams
While they have been a top 10 defense for 2009 they have to deal with the high octane offense that Houston brings with them. They maybe in for some turnovers but I wouldn’t count on them.
